Double vowels - diptongos - diphthongs

There are twelve vowel phonemes in English but also there are eight more dipthongs, formed from two vowel sounds together.  In Spanish, vowel sounds are pronounced separately even when together in a word.  For example, the 'i' and the 'e' in fiesta are both pronounced.  The Spanish word aunque has the 'a' and the 'u' sound pronounced separately. 

Hay doce fonemas vocálicos en inglés pero también hay ocho más diptongos, formados de dos vocales juntos.  En español, los sonidos vocálicos se pronuncian separadamente incluso cuando están juntos.  Por ejemplo, el 'i' y el 'e' en fiesta se pronuncian claramente.  En la palabra española aunque también se pronuncian los vocales 'a' y 'u' claramente.

But in English, the second vowel of the diphthong is much softer, with much less emphasis. When we listen carefully we can hear the second vowel sound.

Pero en inglés, el segundo vocal se pronuncia más suave, con menos énfasis.  Cuando escuchamos atentamente, podemos oir el segundo sonido pero no es tan obvio.

Vowel Sounds

There are twelve vowel sounds in English and only five in Spanish so we need to practise the different sounds.

The video provides some examples of the twelve vowel sounds used in English.  The symbol at the top is from the International Phonetic Alphabet and you can see these symbols used in dictionaries to describe the pronunciation.

Welcome to the blog. It will be in English and Spanish but it is aimed at Spanish speakers learning English in Alcalá, my town in Andalucia. Let's talk about pronuciation, the most difficult aspect of English for Spanish speakers. Why is it so difficult? The most difficult sounds are the vowels because in English, we have twelve different vowel sounds. In Spanish, there are only five.

Vamos a hablar de la pronunciación, el aspecto lo más difícil para hablantes de español. ¿Por qué es tan difícil? Los sonidos los más dificiles son los vocales porque, en inglés tenemos doce fonemas vocálicos diferentes. En Español tenemos sólo cinco.

For that reason, when Spanish people are listening to English, they hear one of their five vocal sounds. When they speak English, they use only those five sounds. To speak English well, we need to use all of the twelve vowel sounds.

Por eso, cuando la gente española está escuchando al inglés, oye uno de sus cinco fonemas vocálicos. Cuando los españoles hablan inglés, utilizan sólo uno de los cinco sonidos. Para hablar inglés bien, necesitamos utilizar todo, los doce sonidos.

For example, in Spanish there is only one sound for the letter 'i' as in "sin" or "pila" - the English sound is 'ee', a long sound. But in English we also have the sound for 'i' as in "six", "sit", a very short sound.

Por ejemplo, en español tenemos sólo uno sonido por la letra 'i' como en "sin" o "pila" - el fonema inglés es 'ee', un sonido largo. Pero en inglés también tenemos el sonido por 'i' como en "six" y "sit", un sonido muy corto.

 It is difficult to hear and reproduce a sound we do not normally use in our own language and it is also difficult to describe it in words. So we use a special alphabet, the international phonetic alphabet. You can practise the sounds with these two videos.

Es difícil oir y reproducir un sonido que normalmente no utilizamos en nuestra lengua propia y también es difícil describirlo en unas palabras. Por eso, utilizamos un alfabeto especial, el alfabeto fonético internacional. Puede practicar los fonemas ingleses con estos dos videos.
