Expresiones raras - strange expressions
This week we are talking a little about strange expressions, the sort of expressions we normally use in everyday conversation. Sometimes we are expressing a sense of surprise, or perhaps the intention is to put an emphasis on something.
Esta semana hablamos un poquito de las frases raras, el tipo de la frase que utilizamos normalmente en una conversación cotidiana. A veces expresamos un sentido de la sorpresa o quizá la intención es que pongamos un énfasis en algo.
Although it looks like a question when we use words like what, how, and Isn't it, these are not questions. It's for emphasis.
Aunque parece como una pregunta cuando utilizamos palabras como what, how, y Isn't it, estas no son preguntas. Es para énfasis.
What a..., How..., Isn't it...
These Spanish equivalents have come from various sources and of course, in different parts of Spain, people use some different expressions. It's possible that there are some partial equivalents used in South America that are not used in Spain and vice versa. Enjoy the differences!

Frases completas - complete phrases or expressions
In both English and Spanish we have many phrases with a particular meaning, a colloquial meaning, but which don't make sense literally. Here are some examples of English phrases with the literal translation into Spanish and a suggested equivalent. Of course, sometimes, there is no equivalent but I have tried.
En inglés y también en español, tememos muchas frases que tienen un sentido particular, un sentido coloquial, pero no tienen ningún sentido literal. Como expresar la posesión - how to express possession
In the class this week, we are talking about personal pronouns and personal adjectives, words like: I, me, my, you, her, his, our, their, them, it, etc.
En la clase esta semana vamos a hablar de los pronombres y adjetivos personales, palabras como: yo, mi, tu, su, nuestro, ellos, lo, etc.
The most important difference between the Spanish and English use of these words is that, in Spanish, the possessive pronoun or adjective agrees in number and gender with the thing possessed. In English, they agree with the possessor of the thing referred to.
La diferencia más importante entre los usos en español y inglés es que, en español, los adjetivos y pronombres personales concuerdan en género y número no con la cosa poseída sino con el poseedor.
For example, in Spanish we say:
Él compró sus libros. He bought his books.
In Spanish, sus is plural because it agrees with libros (books).
En español, sus es plural porque concuerda con libros que es plural.
In English, his is singular because it agrees with he (él).
There are some differences in the use of the possessive pronoun. Look at this example:
It is my book. Es mi libro.
(adjectives, adjetivos: my, mi)
It is mine. Es mío. El el mío.
(pronouns, pronombres: mine = my book, mío/el mío = mi libro)
In English, we never have the/el before mine, yours, his, etc.
En inglés no tenemos nunca el antes del pronombre posesivo.

Word order - orden de las palabras
In Spanish, typically the pronoun comes before the verb. In English, it comes after the verb. En español, tipicamente el pronombre precede al verbo pero en inglés, el pronombre sigue al verbo.

Probabilidad, posibilidad - probability and possibility
Como podemos expresar la incertidumbre, la posibilidad y la probabilidad en inglés? How can we express uncertainty, possibility and probability in English?
Perhaps and maybe
Normalmente, en español utilizamos el subjuntivo para indicar que algo es incierto, por ejemplo cuando utilizamos quizá(s), tal vez y a lo mejor cuando hay dudas. La traducción inglesa es perhaps o maybe y normalmente utilizamos el presente o el futuro. El subjuntivo en inglés está desapareciendo poco a poco. Para los ingleses, siempre es difícil decidir cuando necesitamos utilizar el subjuntivo en español porque en inglés es más sencillo.

The English translation is perhaps or maybe and we normally use them with the present or future tense. The subjunctive in English is disappearing little by little. For the English, it's always difficult to decide when to use the subjunctive in Spanish because in English it's easier.
Quizá se vayan mañana (nota el uso del subjuntivo)
(we use the subjunctive in Spanish)
Perhaps they will leave tomorrow.
They will perhaps leave tomorrow.
Maybe they'll leave tomorrow.
(Utilizamos el futuro en inglés)
Podemos encontrar perhaps en posiciones diferentes en la frase. Pero normalmente, maybe es al comienzo de la frase. (No es una regla estricta, pero...)
We can find perhaps in different places in a sentence but normally maybe is found at the beginning. (Not a strict rule but...)
Frases que indican la incertidumbre

(Note the future tense in English, subjunctive in Spanish)
It's probable that - es probable que
It's probable that they'll get divorced
Es probable que se divorcien (el subjunctivo)
I'm sure that - estoy seguro que
May, might, could
(la posibilidad en el presente o el futuro, possibility in the present or future)
He may + infinitive - puede (que) + verbo (quizá subjuntivo)
He may come tomorrow - puede venir mañana
He might come tomorrow
He could come tomorrow
May have, might have, could have

She may have been at home - ella pudo haber estado en casa
